Medieval Bibles are sumptuous and alluring relics… fabulously embellished objects requiring incredible skill and extraordinary artistry to create. In Medieval times they were considered treasured works of art and gained the status of gifts worthy of kings.
Bibles survived well from the Middle Ages because they were hand written on prepared parchment (animal skin). All books were written by hand, and mostly housed in monastery libraries. Biblical pages were hand painted (illuminated) with rare paints and costly gold leaf and silver. Each dazzling illumination required the dedicated and painstaking labour of a highly skilled person. Monks, scribes and artists embellished and illustrated biblical manuscripts in order to adorn and elaborate the sacred text. In many Latin manuscripts, the initial letter of each biblical book is enlarged and elaborated, often including lavish decorative panels and shapes.
